Almost 50 Percent of Jakartans Occupied Illegal Areas

Jakarta Vice Governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama predicted almost 50 percent of Jakartans occupied some forbidden areas, such as riverbank, reservoir, inspection road, and under bridges. Because of it, Jakarta Provincial Government is planning to conduct control on some forbidden areas to reduce capital city residents.

Controlling illegal residence especially along riverbank is about to start immediately

“We sure that if every slum areas are removed, citizens of Jakarta will decrease because averagely they are staying there, around 80 percent of Jakarta citizens come from outside the city,” Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said at City Hall, Wednesday (5/28).

Basuki assessed, low cost residence rental has caused newcomers booming. Unluckily, they occupy illegal areas.

The situation is worsened by previous policy makers who provided many supporting facilities for newcomers. As the result, population in Jakarta is increasing sharply and the environment seems disorganized.

"Controlling illegal residence especially along riverbank is about to start immediately," Basuki asserted.

Basuki is optimistic if social problems especially related to traffic jam and flood will decrease if the slum residence is controlled.
